The Reflections of Yufuin

If there’s a place that feels like stepping into a fairytale of lakes and mountains, it must be Yufuin in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu. Early in the morning, a stroll to Lake Kinrin reveals a mirror-like surface. The reflections of the torii gate, blue sky, and white clouds create a serene scene, as if inviting you into a meditative state. Lakeside inns line the shore, their reflections gently touching the water, making time itself seem to pause. Japanese wooden signs and local legends scattered around seem to softly narrate stories of the past, turning this small town into not just a scenic spot but a vessel of memories. Walking through towering ancient trees, I arrived at Tenso Shrine, a historic local place of worship. The thick and solemn shimenawa rope on the torii gate, dappled sunlight filtering through the trees—this is the purest expression of Japanese aesthetics. Not far away lies Yufuin Floral Village, a place where dreams come to life. Whimsical mushroom houses, the world of Ghibli’s Totoro, and a classic red Mini car—every corner here compels you to take out your camera and snap away. It’s not just a photo hotspot but a magical corner where both adults and children can escape reality. Leaving Yufuin, I boarded a train to Hita City. The HITA landmark at the station welcomes travelers. Unlike the dreamy Yufuin, Hita exudes a sense of tranquility and ease, making it a perfect place to pause, enjoy a cup of coffee, and stroll through its old streets. This journey is one of nature, culture, and healing. A lake that needs no filter, a fairytale that requires no plot—Yufuin and Hita are beautiful in their own real yet surreal way.
