Malioboro Yogyakarta

MALIOBORO is one of the most popular streets in Yogya. Besides being in the heart of the city, Malioboro has become quite well known because of the historical stories that accompany it. The existence of Malioboro is often associated with three sacred places in Yogya, namely Mount Merapi, the Kraton and the South Beach. In Sanskrit, the word Malioboro means a bouquet of flowers. The word Malioboro also comes from the name of a British colonialist named Marlborough who lived there in 1811 - 1816 AD. The establishment of Jalan Malioboro coincided with the establishment of the Yogyakarta Palace. Initially Malioboro Street was laid out as an imaginary axis between South Beach (Parangkusumo Beach) - Yogya Palace - Mount Merapi. Malioboro began to be crowded in the colonial era in 1790 when the Dutch government built the Vredeburg fort in 1790 at the southern end of this street. In addition to building a fort, the Dutch also built the Dutch Club in 1822, The Dutch Governor's Residence in 1830, the Java Bank and the Post Office shortly after. After that Malioboro grew rapidly because of the trade between the Dutch and the Chinese traders. In 1887 Malioboro Street was divided into two with the establishment of a train stop which is now known as Tugu Yogya Station. Malioboro Street also has an important role in the struggle for Indonesian independence. On the south side of Jalan Malioboro there was a fierce battle between the homeland fighters and the Dutch colonial forces who wanted to occupy Yogya. The battle became known as the General Offensive on March 1, 1949, namely the success of the red and white troops occupying Yogya for six hours and proving to the world that the Indonesian army still existed. Malioboro continues to grow to this day. By retaining the original concept, Malioboro has become the center of life for the people of Yogya.
