In the southeast of Zhengzhuang Village, Wangzhuang Town, Yicheng County, Shanxi Province, lies a quaint temple called Xingfu Yuan. Its exact founding date remains unknown, but existing stone inscriptions clearly record its renovation in the sixth year of the Ming Dynasty's Longqing era (1572 AD). Since then, it has stood quietly for over 450 years. Guarding this ancient temple is an 82-year-old grandmother. Since marrying into the village over six decades ago, she has lived alone in the temple, treating it as her home and dedicating herself to its preservation. Her story bears striking resemblance to that of Grandma Wang, the guardian of Tiefo Temple, who gained widespread attention for her efforts. Yet, this grandmother’s tale carries an added layer of solitude and resilience. Her steadfastness is not just about protecting the temple—it’s a profound devotion to preserving cultural heritage. Her dedication is deeply moving. Like other temple guardians, she deserves more attention and respect. Across Shanxi, there are many such unsung heroes, quietly fading into obscurity, who also warrant the recognition and care they rightly deserve. However, time has not been kind to this ancient temple. For years, Xingfu Yuan has been left in disrepair, with its roof severely damaged and gaping holes visible in multiple places. Whenever it rains or the wind blows, the temple’s painted sculptures and murals are directly exposed to the elements, suffering relentless erosion. As early as 1987, Yicheng County designated Xingfu Yuan as a county-level cultural relic protection site, highlighting its historical and cultural significance. Yet, sadly, by 2014, bloggers had already posted photos online showcasing its dilapidated state, calling for public attention. A decade later, the temple remains in the same heartbreaking condition, seemingly forgotten by the world. One can’t help but wonder: Have local cultural heritage authorities truly turned a blind eye? The frustration and helplessness are beyond words.
