However, the hotel doesn't attract tourists with extravagant, dazzling designs. Instead, it's built by integrating Sumba's rich local culture. It was voted the number one hotel in the world in *Travel + Leisure* magazine's World's Best Hotel awards in both 2016 and 2017 by readers worldwide. NIHI Sumba's wild wilderness awakens something deep within. It features 2.5 km of pristine white sand, world-class waves, tranquil hot springs, and free-roaming horses. 🌱Nihi Sumba Resort officially opened in 2015, built by American couple Claude Graves and Petra. Initially, Graves, a skater, intended to go to Sumba to find the legendary wave, Occy's Left. He managed to find the wave and fell in love with Sumba's natural beauty. In 2012, Graves and Petra partnered with Chris Burch and James McBride to purchase the property and develop it into world-class accommodation. Chris Burch later officially became the owner of the resort, while McBride became Nihi's partner and CEO. Although it was founded by foreign nationals, Nihi Sumba's management also takes social responsibility for the surrounding area. In addition to employing local Sumbanese residents, Nihi's management donates a portion of its profits to the Sumba Foundation. These funds are used to send children to schools around the resort and to help run malaria eradication programs. 🌱About the hotel's facilities and activities: All rooms at NIHI are villas, built in the style of traditional Sumbanese houses.
