🇦🇹 [REVIEW OF SELF-GUIDED AUSTRIAN TOUR – VIENNA – HALLSTATT – SALZBURG 6N5D] I just had a 6-day, 5-night self-guided tour of Austria, visiting 3 famous cities: Vienna – Hallstatt – Salzburg. 🧳 PREPARATION BEFORE THE TRIP Schengen visa: Austria is part of the Schengen area, need to apply for a European visa Flight ticket: I flew Hanoi – Vienna (transit in Doha) round trip ~17 million/person. European 4G SIM: Using eSIM Airalo or physical SIM Three UK is both stable. Apps to install: ÖBB (booking Austrian train tickets), Google Maps, Rome2Rio, international banking app (Revolut, Wise…). European plug socket (2 round pins), umbrella, light warm jacket (because Hallstatt can be cold at night). Vienna City Card: used for public transport + discounted tickets to attractions. 🚄 TRAVEL Within Vienna: mainly take U-Bahn, tram, bus – convenient, clean, punctual. Vienna → Hallstatt: take the ÖBB train to Attnang-Puchheim station, then change to Hallstatt Bahnhof, then take the ferry across the lake. Total time is about 3.5 – 4 hours. Hallstatt → Salzburg: take bus + train about 2 hours. Salzburg → Vienna: return to the capital by Railjet express train (~2.5 hours). 📍 CHECK-IN AND ENTERTAINMENT PLACES 1. Vienna – The ancient capital Schönbrunn Palace: majestic and has a beautiful garden, you should spend 2–3 hours visiting. St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg Palace, Vienna State Opera House – the center of Vienna is very beautiful, walking is fascinating. Albertina Art Museum, Belvedere Museum If you like classical music, you can book tickets to a concert at the Golden Hall or the opera house. 2. Hallstatt – The most beautiful lakeside village in the world The view of Hallstätter See lake is super magical, especially in the early morning and at sunset. Visit the Salt Mine (salt mine) and Skywalk Hallstatt (take a cable car to see the whole village). Walk around the village, eat apple pie (Apfelstrudel) and drink coffee by the lake – very chill! 3. Salzburg – City of Mozart Hohensalzburg Fortress on the hill – the symbol of the city. Mozart House, Residenzplatz, Salzburg Cathedral – the old town is like a movie set. 🍽 MUST-TRY FOOD Wiener Schnitzel (fried veal) – a typical Austrian dish. Tafelspitz (boiled beef with horseradish apple sauce). Apfelstrudel, Sachertorte Restaurants to try: Figlmüller (Vienna – famous for its giant Schnitzel), Café Central, Café Tomaselli (Salzburg). ⚠️ SMALL NOTES Everything is on time, you need to keep track of the time when taking the train/metro.
