Urumqi is often seen as a mere transit point, as most people choose it as a hub for their Xinjiang adventures. But do set aside a day to explore this provincial capital city with its stunning mountain backdrop; marvel at the well-preserved remains of the Loulan Beauty; and, most importantly, bring your appetite to Hetian Erjie (Second Hetian Street), the Grand Bazaar, and Consulate Lane to indulge in a carb feast. Urumqi City Walk Route: Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum➡️Hetian Erjie➡️Grand Bazaar➡️Consulate Lane➡️Xinjiang Folk Street➡️Hongshan Park Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum Tickets: Free Reservations can be made through the museum's official WeChat account (GZH). Reservations for non-holidays can be made on the same day. Hetian Erjie (Second Hetian Street) A favorite food street among Urumqi locals, offering great value and a bustling atmosphere. You'll find countless local snacks here. Yogurt Smoothie: June in Urumqi can be hot, so cool down with a refreshing smoothie. Fruit Paradise: Hami melons, Laohan melons (buy a slice if you can't finish a whole one), small white apricots, pomegranate juice… International Grand Bazaar "Bazaar" means "market." The Grand Bazaar is highly commercialized, and the food here is slightly pricier compared to Hetian Erjie. However, the Islamic architecture makes for great photos. You'll also spot Afanti and his little donkey throughout the bazaar, bringing back childhood memories. Near the Grand Bazaar, you'll find Damo Hongzuiyan Restaurant, which serves authentic and delicious Xinjiang cuisine at reasonable prices. It's definitely worth a try. Consulate Lane Home to many local snacks, located near the Grand Bazaar. Xinjiang Folk Street Features Islamic-style architecture, with the third floor offering the best photo opportunities. Hongshan Park Tickets: Free An easy climb to the top of this hill offers panoramic views of Urumqi, especially beautiful at sunset. Century Pavilion If you're interested in visiting, check the weather and navigate to "Banshanwanpan Northeast Gate" to climb to the top for city and mountain views. Accommodation: Urumqi offers reasonably priced accommodation. Consider staying near Hetian Erjie. Around Urumqi: Turpan, Tianchi Lake, Dabancheng… Turpan is highly recommended.
