Tsuzura Terraced Rice Fields in Ukiha City, One of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields

The Tsuzura Terraced Rice Fields in Ukiha City are among Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields. These historic terraces are said to have been developed around 400 years ago. Local residents cultivated approximately 300 layers of terraces on about seven hectares of land in the river valley. The stone walls, built with stones from the mountains, firmly support these extensive terraces. Besides the terraces, the 500,000 red spider lilies that bloom in autumn are also quite famous. The 'Ukiha City Terraced Rice Fields Spider Lily Tour & Basara Festival' (a traditional event where residents drive around various settlements and share local mountain produce) attracts many visitors every year.
