Tromsø, Norway, the gateway to the Arctic

Tromsø, Norway's largest city within the Arctic Circle and known as the "Gateway to the Arctic," is the administrative and cultural center of Tromsø-Finnmark County, hosting numerous festivals each summer. The city is home to the world's northernmost university, the University of Tromsø - The Arctic University of Norway, as well as the northernmost botanical garden and planetarium. The city center boasts the largest collection of old wooden houses in northern Norway, the oldest dating back to 1789. Due to the westerly winds reaching this far north and the influence of the North Atlantic Drift, a branch of the Gulf Stream, Tromsø enjoys milder temperatures than most settlements at similar latitudes. Travelers to Arctic Norway often fly here and continue north.
