Located in Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, Wuzhen sits at the heart of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai "Golden Triangle" and the Hangjiahu Plain, approximately 60 kilometers from both Hangzhou and Suzhou, and 106 kilometers from Shanghai. With a history that can be traced back over 6,000 years, Wuzhen is one of the six ancient towns of Jiangnan in China. 1. Known as "Wu Dun" or "Wu Shu" in ancient times, Wuzhen's history is deeply intertwined with the Wu-Yue culture. During the late Spring and Autumn period, it served as a military outpost on the border between Wu and Yue. In the Tang Dynasty, Wuzhen was under the jurisdiction of Suzhou Prefecture, and the name "Wuzhen" first appeared in the "Suojing Mingwang Temple Stele." Rich in cultural heritage, Wuzhen has been home to many notable figures, including the literary giant Mao Dun. 2. The moment I first set foot in Wuzhen, I was captivated by this Jiangnan water town. The quaint streets, the riverside houses, and the serene, unhurried atmosphere made me feel as though I had traveled back in time to an ancient yet vibrant world. 3. Though small in size, Wuzhen, located in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, boasts a profound historical and cultural legacy. Walking along its streets, you can sense the ancient and unpretentious charm. Every cobblestone and every old house seems to whisper tales of its past. 4. I particularly adore Wuzhen's waterside pavilions. Built along the river, these pavilions are arranged in a picturesque manner, embodying the unique character of a Jiangnan water town. They are not just homes for the locals but also places where they interact closely with the river. You can see residents washing clothes and vegetables by the water, and children playing in the river—a heartwarming and comforting scene. The architectural style of these pavilions is so distinctive that it leaves a lasting impression. 5. In Wuzhen, you can also savor many authentic Jiangnan delicacies. For instance, Wuzhen's Bai Shui Yu (clear water fish) features tender meat and a rich, flavorful broth that lingers on the palate. San Zhen Zhai soy sauce chicken is another local specialty, juicy and aromatic. Additionally, Gu Sao Bing (sister-in-law cakes), a traditional sweet pastry with a unique Wuzhen flavor, is a must-try. 6. Beyond its cuisine, Wuzhen offers numerous attractions worth exploring. Xizha Old Street, for example, is a well-preserved ancient thoroughfare lined with shops selling a variety of handicrafts and local snacks, a feast for the eyes.
