Tokyo's Shiba Park: West-Facing Kannon and Thousand Jizo Statues

I visited the West-Facing Kannon and Thousand Jizo Statues located in Shiba Park, Tokyo. These are situated within the grounds of Zojoji Temple. The West-Facing Kannon is a stone statue said to have been enshrined during the Kamakura period by Hojo Tokiyori, who built a roadside shrine on Kannon Mountain (now the site of Tokyo Tower) facing the Kamakura Highway. It is believed to bring blessings for child-rearing and safe childbirth. The Thousand Jizo Statues have been gradually enshrined since 1975, with prayers for children's healthy growth and well-being. The vibrant red knit hats and pinwheels adorning the statues were strikingly colorful.
