Two Monuments Telling the History of Ueno: "Statue of Takamori Saigo and the Graves of the Shogitai"

Ueno Onshi Park is home to two important spots that capture the history of people active from the late Edo period to the Meiji Restoration. These are the "Statue of Takamori Saigo" and the "Graves of the Shogitai." The Statue of Takamori Saigo stands proudly right near the JR Ueno Station Park Exit, welcoming visitors. Dressed in hunting attire and accompanied by his beloved dog Tsun, Saigo-don’s figure feels somehow approachable and has become a symbol of Ueno. This bronze statue, built in 1898, was erected to honor the achievements of Takamori Saigo, a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. It was created by Koun Takamura and Sadayuki Goto, and the distinguished inscriptions on the pedestal are also worth noting. Facing Saigo’s statue, near Ueno Toshogu Shrine, the "Graves of the Shogitai" quietly stand. The Shogitai were a group of former Tokugawa retainers who fought to preserve the Tokugawa shogunate at the end of the Edo period. After their defeat by the imperial forces in the 1868 Battle of Ueno, a monument was later built as the resting place for their souls. This grave, which can be seen as a memorial to these unknown warriors, still conveys their regret and loyalty today.
