Shaolin Temple.

Shaolin Temple generally refers to the Shaolin Temple on Mount Song in Dengfeng, Henan. It is said to have originated from Bodhidharma and is the ancestral home of Chinese Zen Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts. In addition to the Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, there is also a Northern Shaolin Temple in Tianjin. According to the "Jixian County Annals," the Northern Shaolin Temple was originally named "Faxing Temple" and later called the Northern Shaolin Zen Temple. It is located on the open hillside of the "Middle Pan" on the southeast slope of Panshan Mountain in Jixian County, Tianjin. It was built during the Wei and Jin dynasties, with a history of about 1,500 years. It is the earliest Buddhist temple recorded in the Jixian County Annals and the earliest temple in Tianjin. According to historical records, during the Yuan Dynasty, Taoism was revered. In the 23rd year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1286 AD), a Taoist named Zao Yunzi sent his disciple Zhang Zhige to choose a site for a Taoist temple and finally chose Panshan Mountain. Later, the Taoists renamed it Qiyun Temple. In the second year of the Yanyou era of Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty (1315 AD), Emperor Renzong issued an edict to restore Qiyun Temple to a Buddhist monastery and renamed it the Northern Shaolin Zen Temple. Zen Master Xueting Fuyu taught the monks in the temple to practice Shaolin martial arts. As for the Southern Shaolin Temple, a large amount of information shows that it did exist, but it was suppressed by the Qing court during the Qing Dynasty for participating in anti-Qing and pro-Ming activities. Whether it was completely burned down or renamed is still debated by researchers. However, it can be confirmed that: 1. It did exist; 2. The Southern Shaolin Temple was in Fujian; 3. It left behind a rich martial arts tradition different from the Northern Shaolin. The three ancient temples with the most supporters are the Putian Shaolin Temple, the Quanzhou Shaolin Temple, and the Fuqing Shaolin Temple (so far, six Shaolin Temples have appeared in Fujian: Jiuzuo Temple in Xianyou, Gulao Temple in Dongshan, Changlin Temple in Zhao'an, Fuqing Shaolin Temple, Dongchan Shaolin Temple in Quanzhou, and Linquan Temple in Putian). During the Ming Dynasty, due to the harassment of Japanese pirates, the Southern Shaolin Temple sent monk soldiers to fight against the pirates along the coast of Fujian. Therefore, there is a theory of martial arts returning, that is, the martial arts of the Southern Shaolin Temple during the Ming Dynasty returned to the Northern Shaolin.
