In northern Taiyuan, Shanxi, lies a village called Baiban Village. According to Volume 3, "Villages," of the "Yangqu County Annals" compiled during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the village was originally named "Baiban" (White Board) before being renamed "Baiban" (Cypress Board). The prominent families in the village are the Zhang, Li, and Gao clans. The oldest surviving building in Baiban Village is Residence No. 16. Based on the existing beam structure, the residence exhibits architectural styles from the Ming Dynasty, while the painted decorations reflect Qing Dynasty influences. However, even the village elders are unsure of the exact construction date. Residence No. 16 follows the classic Jin-style courtyard layout, featuring a front hall and rear living quarters. Unfortunately, due to historical reasons, the front and rear courtyards are now owned by two separate families. Also known as the Zhang Family Residence, its second courtyard features a six-rafter front corridor-style hall with a flush gable roof. Inside, the beams and gable decorations are adorned with intricate paintings and murals. In ancient times, the main hall of a wealthy family was called the "central hall," serving as a vital space in traditional Chinese culture and daily life—where distinguished guests were received, family matters were discussed, and descendants received teachings. The hall’s screen door is ingeniously designed, resembling a miniature gatehouse structure with elements like lintels, architraves, brackets, ceilings, and painted decorations, making it unique among Shanxi residences. However, the residence is currently in poor condition, with a damaged roof and leaks, urgently requiring restoration.
