Chongshan Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty and was originally called Baima Temple. It was renamed Yanshou Temple in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is said to have been the palace of Emperor Yang of Sui when he visited Taiyuan, and it is also said to be the place where Empress Wu Zetian became a nun when she was young. The "Zong Tang Yizhi" (Tang Dynasty Relic) plaque on the right of the mountain gate today is likely to have originated from these legends.
