Jiangnan Ancient Town Facing the Sea — Taicang Shaxi

Taicang was originally one with the sea until about ten thousand years ago when it gradually became part of the mainland due to crustal subsidence and climate influences. The Neo-Cathaysian tectonic system that developed during the middle and late Mesozoic era created Taicang's unique topography with its "rice" character-shaped structure. The only natural mountain in the area—Mount Chuan, located in Fanshan Village of Shaxi Town—stands as evidence of its former existence as part of the sea. Shen Zhou, one of the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty," wrote in a poem: "Of all the mountains in the world, Mount Chuan is the smallest." Through the passage of time, this ancient town that rose from the sea changed its name from Shatou to Yinxi, Tuanxi, and finally settled on Shaxi, never forgetting its origins despite weathering many changes. Taicang Shaxi, also known as Yinxi and Tuanxi, was established during the Tang Dynasty and has over 1,300 years of history. The ancient town preserves numerous traditional buildings from the late Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, Republican era, and post-liberation periods. Compared to the bustling East Market Street, I prefer West Market Street with its rich historical atmosphere and vibrant everyday life.
