Wat Sri Sawai, Sukhothai

Wat Si Sawai is located about 350 meters south of Wat Mahathat. This important ancient site located in the wall consists of three prangs in the Lopburi art style. The shape of the prang is quite slender and is situated on a low base. Some of the stucco patterns resemble those on Chinese pottery. During the Yuan Dynasty, a lintel carved with the image of Narayana reclining on the ocean was found, along with fragments of idols and a lingam, indicating that it was once a Hindu temple before being transformed into a Buddhist temple by adding a chapel at the front. It then became a Buddhist temple later. Wat Si Sawai was originally a Brahman or Hindu temple. It is a three-tiered prang in the Khmer style with a moat surrounding the three prangs. This ancient site originated from the Khmer castle style, but was modified from the original, such as the decoration of the Khmer castle called Ban Thalang, which became a jackfruit petal shape, and the stucco decorations with jackfruit petals in the shape of Garuda fighting the naga and angels. The prang of Wat Si Sawai is therefore different from the prangs of the Ayutthaya period, which were originally derived from Prang in Khmer art and more similar to Khmer style than Sukhothai style prang #Waiting for the day to travel
