Stavanger: A Nordic Town at the End of the World of Architecture

🇳🇴⛪️Standing beneath the sandstone walls of Stavanger Domkirke, the oldest stone church in Northern Europe, built in 1125, the Romanesque arches and Gothic spires blend together like an open textbook of medieval architecture. Pushing open the oak door, beneath the 28-meter-high ribbed dome, the grain of the 16th-century pine benches intertwines with the luster of the 17th-century gilded altar. Sunlight filters through the faded stained-glass windows of the Pietà, casting blue-green spots of light on the gray-white stone walls. Climb the 197 spiral stone steps to the top of the North Tower, where the container terminal on the Weser River collides with the white wooden houses of the old town in the field of vision, as if time and space are folded here. Stavanger Old Town, Stavanger Cathedral 🌤🇳🇴In the evening, walk to the Hafsfjord, where the Viking Sword Monument, three giant swords forged from ancient swords, pierce the twilight. The 15-meter-high bronze sword reflects the sea, and the inscriptions of peace, unity, and freedom become clearer in the sound of the tide.
