Soni Plateau

This bowl-shaped plateau at the foot of Mt. Kameyama is one of the most famous spots in the Kansai region for Japanese silver grass. Many tourists visit in autumn when the ears of Japanese silver grass turn silvery. To easily enjoy the Soni Plateau, hike up the stepped trail to Kameyama Pass, then follow the ridge to the summit of Mt. Kameyama at an altitude of 849m and descend to the plateau. It takes about an hour to go around, but it is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes at least sneakers. The view from Kameyama Pass is wonderful. The gently sloping Soni Plateau spreads out below you with Okame Pond at the center, and behind it are mountains such as Byobuiwa, Sumizukayama, Kunimiyama, Kabutodake, and Yoroitake, which are lined up like a folding screen. If you have the time and energy, we recommend a round trip from Kameyama Pass via Nibonboso to Mt. Kuraizumi (altitude 1,037m). It takes just under two hours round trip, but you will be walking along a rocky ridge with many ups and downs, which will wear you out more than the distance. There is a local bus to get there, but you will have to walk quite a bit from the bus stop.
