Singapore

is an island city country located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Southeast Asia. With an area of about 735,7 km², this country consists of one main island and 63 other small islands. Bordered by Malaysia in the north through the Strait of Johor and with the Riau Islands, Indonesia in the south through the Strait of Singapore.   🏛️ History of Singapore The name "Singapore" comes from the Sanskrit "Siṃhapura" which means "Lion City". According to legend, a prince from Sriwijaya named Sang Nila Utama discovered this island in the 13th century and named it after seeing an animal that he believed to be a lion.   In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded the British port in Singapore, making it a strategic trading center between India and China. After the British colonial period and Japanese occupation during World War II, Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
