A wildlife Centre!

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is one of three orangutan rehabilitation centres in Malaysia where you can see semi-wild orang-utans in natural forest. It is one of the most popular attractions in Sarawak and is highly accessible from Kuching. Located abour 20KM or 45 minutes from Kuching city, there is a natural habitat which acts as a home to Orangutans. The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is by far the biggest Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak. It was established as a sanctuary for Orangutans who are injured, orphaned or being kept captive as illegal pets. Currently, the centre serves as a habitat for the Orangutans and also a place for visitors to learn about the endangered rare species. This wildlife centre has a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult semi-wild Orangutans. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but are trained to get back to the centre during feeding times where they will be able to get a free meal from the caretakers. Though they have been trained to get back to the centre during feeding time, they may not appear to get a free meal during the forest fruiting season. As at today, there are over twenty Orangutans living at Semenggoh and the forest reserves carrying capacity has been reached. Sarawak’s orangutan rehabilitation activities have now been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre but Semenggoh remains the best place in Sarawak to get up-close with orangutan. The best time to visit is during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions. These take place daily at 9am and 3pm respectively. It is a good idea to reach the centre before the feeding commences. Sometimes the orangutan come out early and hang out around. If you are there early you may get a chance to watch them before they move to the feeding platform.
