I Fell in Love with Shaoxing from My Textbooks: A Family Food and Learning Tour

🚗 We took a trip to Shaoxing and enjoyed a relaxing weekend. From Hundred Herb Garden to Three-Flavor Study, from Lu Xun's Ancestral Home to Lu Xun's Former Residence. From Shaoxing-style Huaiyang cuisine to beautiful omakase Japanese meals. 🏨 Marriott Shangyu Shaoxing This impressive building, which cost 650 million yuan to construct, truly embodies grandeur with its industrial aesthetics blended with "Yue charm and Yu rhythm." The high-ceilinged lobby is magnificent, with a suspended art installation called "A Thousand Sails Passing" created by a local bamboo weaving heritage artist, while the ancient guqin melody "Yu Shun South Wind" plays in the background. The floor-to-ceiling windows in our room overlooked the city traffic. We enjoyed welcome fruits, This Works toiletries, and a PG bathtub. The executive lounge was convenient for grabbing a drink anytime. The breakfast buffet earned extra points for its freshly squeezed juices. The 25-meter glass swimming pool and gym offer amazing views of the city skyline, and there are also dry and wet steam rooms and a yoga studio. 🥢 Marriott Chinese Restaurant The Chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor exceeded our expectations. The cuisine blends traditional Huaiyang and Jiangzhe dishes, and the private dining room features decorative paintings with strong Jiangnan ink-wash style. The black truffle vegetarian roast goose had crispy bean curd skin wrapping with a rich mushroom aroma and intense truffle flavor. The Snow Flake Bright Moon pigeon egg soup featured tender pigeon eggs in a clear, fresh broth. The signature hairtail fish fried rice was savory with great wok hei. The crispy sesame chicken's key feature was indeed its crispy skin, with tender meat inside. The black pepper beef cubes, tasty sauce cauliflower, and Cantonese choy sum were all perfectly seasoned and cooked. 🍣 Xian Xun Japanese Restaurant I never expected to find Omakase in Shaoxing! We sat at the counter seats and enjoyed watching the chef prepare sushi throughout the meal. The fresh fish sashimi was tender and soft, the hand-rolled sushi featured fresh ingredients with rice that held together perfectly, and the snow crab meat vinegar jelly offered a sweet and sour taste that cut through the richness... At the end, the chef asked, "Are you full?"
