An Unexpected Encounter on a Walk in Dongshan (Part I)

I went to Dongshan for noodles🍜, and since I was early, I decided to take a stroll in Xiangshuijian🚶. Near the Moli Middle School, I turned into a small alley and found an old stone gatehouse in the middle of the road, its stones bearing the marks of age. The gate was slightly ajar, and with a gentle push, a stone carving on the ground came into view—a beautifully crafted mythical beast. It captivated me so much that I couldn't tear myself away. Inside, an elderly man was pouring water. I mustered up the courage to greet him, and he responded in Shanghainese, telling me that he had bought this old house many years ago and was now fixing it up for his retirement. How wonderful👍 I took a closer look at the old house, which was exquisitely detailed. It seemed to be the third section. The brick-carved archway was double-sided, with 'Three Phoenixes Coming to the Courtyard' on the inside and 'Orchid and Lan Residence' on the outside, signed from the Tongzhi era. This indicates that the house dates back to the late Qing dynasty. The third section was probably the inner quarters for women. The main hall was three bays wide and very well preserved, thanks in part to the owner's extensive renovations. Since it was disconnected from the previous and subsequent sections, the side door had been converted into the main entrance. Looking at the exquisite mythical beast on the ground, one could imagine how luxurious this mansion must have been. After taking it all in, I said goodbye to the owner, who mentioned that the house opposite his was even bigger and more beautiful. I thanked him again and took my leave.
