⛪ Sevanavank: a monastery for guilty monks

People didn't come here for the view. They sent people here for their sins. The monastery on Sevan Island was strict and intended primarily for monks from Etchmiadzin who had committed some offense. In 1830, the French traveler Jean-Marie Chopin described the local regime briefly: no meat, no wine, no youth, and no women. Today, it is one of the most visited places in Armenia. But the island has long ceased to be an island. 🏝 An Island From Under Which the Water Has Receded The monastery was founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, daughter of Ashot I. It stood on an island. During Soviet times, Sevan's water was used to irrigate the Ararat Valley and power a cascade of hydroelectric power plants on the Hrazdan River. The lake level dropped by approximately 20 meters, and the island merged with the shore. That's why old books refer to it as an "island monastery," but you'll arrive by car at the parking lot at the foot of the stairs. At the top are two small dark stone churches, Surb Arakelots and Surb Astvatsatsin, and nearby are khachkars and the ruins of a gavit. The lake lies at an altitude of about 1,900 meters. The light here is harsh and mountainous: the water is sometimes deep blue, sometimes steely when the clouds roll in. There's almost a constant wind, and from above, you can see the peninsula's curved shoreline. 🧗 The Ascent From the parking lot, 200-230 steps lead up. At this altitude, they feel steeper than they look, so go slowly and don't try to be a hero. Entry is free: this is a functioning monastery, not a museum with a ticket office. Arrive during daylight hours. 🚌 How to get there from Yerevan Sevanavank is 65-70 km away along the M4 highway; by car or taxi, it's about an hour and a half. A budget option: take a minibus from Yerevan's Northern Bus Station to the town of Sevan. Buses run from approximately 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM, with the journey time being approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Pay the driver in drams. Important: the minibus will take you to the city, not the monastery. The peninsula is still a few kilometers away; the easiest way is to call a taxi through an app. 💡 Lifehacks · Arrive early, before the tour groups from Yerevan. The light is softer in the morning, and the stairs are clearer. · Wear a windbreaker, even in August. At altitude, wind, coolness, and harsh sun can all happen in the same day; sunscreen is also useful. · Dress modestly, don't use flashlights in churches, and don't photograph worshipers without permission. · Walk around the peninsula. On the southern shore is the rest home of the Writers' Union of Armenia, and on the northern shore are the new buildings of the seminary. The presidential summer residence occupies the eastern shore. · About fish. Ishkhan, the Sevan trout, is an endangered species; commercial fishing has long been banned. Common rainbow trout is often served under this name on menus. Want local fish with a clear conscience? Order whitefish, which is legally caught and farmed in Sevan. · Swimming is possible in July and August, when the water temperature is around 20°C. On weekends, the beaches are packed with Yerevan residents, so choose weekdays for the beach. · Do you have half a day left? Forested Dilijan lies further along the same M4 highway beyond the Sevan Pass, making it a classic "lake and mountains" day. Would you endure the 19th-century monastic regime for at least a week? #Sevanavank #LakeSevan #Sevan #Armenia #Yerevan #Monasteries
