A Journey Back in Time at Namsangol Hanok Village

#cityplaybook Namsangol Hanok Village, nestled on the northern slopes of Namsan Mountain, was a place I'd long wanted to visit, and my first experience certainly didn't disappoint! From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this village is a popular destination, with a noticeable presence of foreign tourists eager to soak in Korean tradition. Established by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in April 1998, the village features five beautifully restored or relocated hanoks (traditional Korean houses). While there are only five houses, each one offers a unique and distinct experiential program. I was particularly drawn to the various craft programs and definitely plan to make a reservation for a hands-on making experience on my next visit! Beyond the hanoks, the village is a delight for a leisurely stroll. The traditional gardens are meticulously maintained, providing a serene backdrop for contemplation. A unique highlight is the Seoul Millennium Time Capsule, adding an intriguing modern touch to the historical surroundings. It’s a fantastic place to wander around and truly enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Namsangol Hanok Village is more than just a collection of old houses; it's a vibrant cultural and artistic space that reinterprets the lives of our ancestors, allowing us to better understand and enjoy traditional culture and heritage today. The village hosts a diverse array of programs, including traditional experiences, traditional weddings, hanok concerts, and various folk festivals for holidays like Seollal, Ipchun, Jeongwol Daeboreum, Chuseok, and Dongji. They also offer special exhibitions (Art Lab, House Museum) and even summer vacation programs in July and August. One of the added bonuses of this location is the clear view of Namsan Tower from the village – a lovely backdrop to the traditional scenery. The text highly recommends frequent visits, as "each season has its own unique characteristics and charm." Before you leave, be sure to check out Chungjeongsa Shrine next to the main gate of the hanok village; it's said to be a place where three wishes come true! In summary, Namsangol Hanok Village is an absolute must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Korean traditional culture, enjoy beautiful gardens, and even catch a glimpse of Namsan Tower. Its diverse programs and seasonal beauty guarantee a memorable experience. #seoultrip #park
