Sea of Hydrangeas at Zuihoden in Sendai

Located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Zuihoden is the ornate mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain. It was constructed in 1637 by the second domain lord, Date Tadamune, following Masamune's wishes to be buried at Mount Kyogamine. The mausoleum showcases the intricate carvings and vibrant colors of Momoyama culture. Although it was destroyed during the Sendai air raid in 1945, it was faithfully reconstructed in 1979. A museum on-site displays burial artifacts and a restored likeness of Masamune. Every year from early to mid-summer, hydrangeas quietly bloom along the approach to the mausoleum and around the city-operated housing near the mausoleum grounds. The clusters of blue, purple, and pink flowers adorn the towering ancient trees, creating a striking contrast with the solemn temple. In this serene setting, the interplay of floral shadows and greenery adds a touch of elegance and romance to the path of worship, making it a must-see sight when visiting Zuihoden during the summer.
