Bhumibol Dam

Bhumibol Dam, also known as Yanhee Dam, is the first multi-purpose dam in Thailand. It is a large concrete arch dam, the highest in Thailand and Southeast Asia, and is ranked 8th in the world. It is 154 meters high from the base to the crest of the dam. It was built to block the Ping River at Khao Kaew, Sam Ngao District, for use in generating electricity and irrigation. The Ping River from the dam to Hot District, Chiang Mai Province is 207 kilometers long. The area around the Bhumibol Dam is a place for relaxation and fish breeding. Interesting places in the Bhumibol Dam reservoir include: - Phra Phutthabat Doi Khao Nam, an island in the middle of the Bhumibol Dam reservoir. There is a temple called Phra Phutthabat on the mountain. Inside the temple are footprints of the Buddha, Phra Phutthabat Kaew, and a pavilion enshrining the principal Buddha image. The surrounding area has beautiful scenery. - Valentine Island, a small island with a sandy beach for swimming. You can travel to Valentine Island and Phra Phutthabat by renting a boat from the Bhumibol Dam. The trip takes about 30 minutes. There is also a rafting service using a towed boat or a cruise ship passing various tourist attractions, including Phra Phutthabat Khao Nam, Valentine Island, and Doi Chao Pho Luang.
