Monknash to Southerndown – A Wild and Windy Walk Along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast

One of the most breathtaking walks I’ve done recently was the cliff-top trail between Monknash Beach and Southerndown in South Wales. This stretch of the Wales Coast Path is an absolute gem — wild, rugged, and rich with coastal charm. I started at Monknash, where the path winds through peaceful meadows and woodland before opening out to views of the Bristol Channel. The descent to Monknash Beach via Cwm Nash is especially lovely — a quiet, pebbled bay framed by dramatic cliffs, perfect for a peaceful pause. From there, the coastal path climbs back up over the cliffs. The views are jaw-dropping — sheer rock faces, wildflowers, and the endless sea. I passed grazing sheep, crossed old stiles, and navigated a few steep valleys like Cwm Mawr, which adds a bit of excitement (and a small workout!) to the route. Eventually, the trail leads to Southerndown (Dunraven Bay) — a wide, sandy beach backed by cliffs and the ruins of Dunraven Castle. The walled gardens nearby are a beautiful place to rest and reflect after the walk. Best time to visit? Spring or early summer is ideal when the coast is full of wildflowers and the weather is crisp but sunny. Avoid high tide if you plan to explore the beach. Route info: Start: Monknash, Vale of Glamorgan End: Southerndown/Dunraven Bay Distance: Around 6 miles (one way) Facilities: Parking and toilets at both ends Note: Check tide times, especially if heading onto the beach #walescoastpath #monknashbeach #southerndown #glamorganheritagecoast #coastalwalksuk #wildwales #hiddengemswales #dunravenbay #naturefix #triprecommended
