Between Monknash and Southerndown – A Coastal Hike That Stays With You

#cityplaybook There’s something about the wildness of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast that really stays with you — and the stretch between Monknash Beach and Southerndown is the perfect way to experience it. It’s more than just a walk — it’s a journey across cliffs, time, and tide. I began my adventure near Monknash, following a quiet track through ancient woodland until I reached the open cliffs. The air was fresh, the sea breeze bracing, and almost immediately I was met with sweeping views across the Bristol Channel. Below, the dramatic rock formations and layered cliffs told stories of centuries past. Descending into the little valley of Cwm Nash, I reached the pebbled Monknash Beach. It felt like a secret — rugged, beautiful, and remote. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks, the seabirds circling above, the scent of salt and wild garlic — everything was alive. Climbing again along the cliffs, the path winds its way past wildflower meadows and grazing sheep, offering one cinematic view after another. Before long, the coastline opens up to reveal Dunraven Bay, also known as Southerndown Beach. With its golden sands, towering cliffs, and the remains of Dunraven Castle, it felt like the perfect end to the journey. Insider tip: Take a break in the walled gardens above the bay — peaceful, colourful, and a little unexpected. And bring a flask — there’s no better way to enjoy the view than with a warm drink in hand. Distance: Roughly 6 miles one way Best time to visit: Late spring or early autumn — for fewer crowds and unbeatable light Parking: Available at both Monknash and Dunraven Bay Watch out: Tide times matter! Don’t get caught exploring the beaches too close to high tide #walescoastpath #monknashtosoutherndown #glamorgancoast #wildwalks #hiddenwales #cliffsideadventures #seasidestories #natureheals #triprecommended
