"Malakas" Bernardo Carpio, a legendary giant in Philippine folklore, was said to possess immense strength and sought to protect his people from Spanish colonizers. When he defied the Spaniards and their sorcerers, they cast an enchantment that trapped him between the two colossal mountains, Mt. Pamitinan and Mt. Binacayan. Using his incredible might, he prevents the mountains from completely crushing him, but his struggles occasionally shake the earth, causing earthquakes. It is believed that Bernardo Carpio's spirit remains bound in the mountains, awaiting the day he will finally break free.
