Italian Dolomites

The Dolomites are located in the southern part of the Alps in northeastern Italy. They are made up of 18 majestic limestone peaks. Their diverse landscape includes more than 1,416 square kilometers of jagged spires, steep rock faces, perennial glaciers, deep canyons, lush forests and crystal clear lakes. Due to its magnificent scenery and well-preserved Mesozoic carbonate platform system formed 250 million years ago, it stretches from the Adige River in the west to the Pieve Valley in the east, the Puster Valley in the north to the Sugana Valley in the south. The highest point is Ponta Penha on Mount Marmolada at 3,343 meters above sea level. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Dolomites are famous for skiing and mountaineering, hiking, biking and base jumping in the winter, and paragliding and hang gliding in the summer and late spring and early fall.
