A Vibrant Fishing Village! Italy's World Heritage Site

Located on the western coast of Italy, just below the knee of the boot-shaped map, is Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is a collective name for five fishing villages and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among them, the southeasternmost village is Riomaggiore. Colorful houses are densely packed even on the steep cliffs! And during summer, people enjoy themselves on the rocky shores by the sea, despite the seemingly uncomfortable spots to lie down. It's a scene you don't often see in Japan. At night, the village transforms into a fantastical and slightly melancholic landscape. Cinque Terre is compact enough to explore in a day. You can combine train rides and sightseeing boats, hopping off at different stops along the way. If you have large luggage, it's better to stay in one place. I chose to stay in a flatter village where rolling a suitcase was easier. Among the five villages, I skipped one located in the mountains. I visited Cinque Terre while traveling north from Florence before entering France. While I wished I had another day to swim leisurely or shop, it was still satisfying to explore and take photos. Though not widely known in Japan yet, Cinque Terre offers a unique and stunning landscape.
