in touch with Taoism...

Laoshan or Mount Lao, located just outside of Qingdao in China's eastern Shandong Province is known as the one of the cradles of Taoism. It's affiliation with Taoism is historic and can be seen it it's many well-preserved pagodas, gates, stupas, temples, statues, as well as the surrounding scenic beauty. The whole area is set against majestic mountain faces and peaks, adjacent to the ocean below, providing a stunning contrast-especially if you climb up to the top! There are many places to buy a souvenir or a snack here, or even a namesake cold Laoshan beer! I recommend watching the monks walk around and performing their religion duties at the various temples whilst breathing in the scented smell of the fragrances they burn outside. Getting here is relatively simple from downtown Qingdao; taxi, private car or bus are the easiest ways to get to the main entrance, taking about 30 minutes. Once there you will need to buy tickets and board another tourist bus up the mountain to the steps anyway, driving along the picturesque costal road. You can do this place in half a day. I suggest doing it in Spring or Summer in the late afternoon, as you can witness the sunset over the ocean.
