The magnificent transformation of the old cigarette factory #Pingyan1936 Cultural Base-Pingtung City, Pingtung County

#trip Family Outing Choice The Pingyan 1936 Cultural Base, located in downtown Pingtung, is a key centerpiece of Pingtung County's Grand Museum Project. Formerly the Pingtung Branch Leaf Tobacco Re-Drying Plant, built in 1936, it was once Taiwan's largest primary tobacco processing plant. Following the passage of time and industrial transformation, the county government's historical site revitalization project successfully transformed this approximately 4.2-hectare historical complex into an immersive museum complex that integrates history, art, ethnic culture, and innovative technology, making it a striking cultural landmark in southern Taiwan. The Pingyan 1936 Cultural Base not only preserves the magnificent factory buildings, warehouses, and towering chimneys of the past, but also infuses its precious historical heritage with a contemporary revitalization. As Taiwan's first tobacco-themed museum, it fully preserves the massive tobacco processing machinery of the time, including the re-smoking machine and the deboning area. It's worth noting that climbing the preserved "catwalk" (high-altitude inspection walkway) within the Tobacco Museum offers a bird's-eye view of the entire industrial space, allowing you to experience the majestic grandeur and unique light and shadow of the industrial-style architecture. The base buildings retain the rugged and elegant lines of the industrial style of the Japanese colonial period. Especially thanks to the lighting design, the Pingyan tobacco factory buildings, chimneys, and outdoor green walls are illuminated by warm light at night, creating a charming atmosphere that is both retro and cyberpunk, making it a must-see for photography enthusiasts. The charm of Pingyan 1936 lies in its exhibitions that encompass Pingtung's rich and diverse ethnic culture, utilizing extensive digital technology to create an immersive sensory feast: The Hakka Museum: Using abstract visual design and light projection, it presents the traditional daily rituals, the spirit of farming in the sun and studying in the rain, and the local cultural characteristics of the Liudui Hakka people of Pingtung, allowing visitors to understand the Liudui Hakka people from a new perspective. The Indigenous Peoples' Hall: Through immersive experiences and interactive installations, it offers an in-depth look at the life, weaving, hunting, and musical cultures of Pingtung's indigenous groups, including the Paiwan and Rukai. The warehouse complex within the base frequently hosts high-quality immersive special exhibitions, such as one themed on Dawu Mountain. Through surround projections, fragrance, and sound effects, visitors were transported to the mountains and felt the natural pulse of southern Taiwan. The Pingyan 1936 Cultural Center, using the concept of "Golden Leaf Rebirth," has transformed a former industrial memory into a new cultural center imbued with a futuristic feel and local warmth. It is a cultural highlight not to be missed on any trip to Pingtung. @trip.com_tw "Download the Trip.com app ➜ Search [FamilyTravel] on the homepage ➜ View recommended family trips and exclusive deals!"

Taiwan Indigenous Culture Park

It's about a 20-minute train ride from Kaohsiung to Pingtung Station. From there, it's another hour by bus to reach , located in the Sandimen area in the mountains. Buses don't run frequently, but if you leave in the morning you'll be able to catch the morning performance. We recommend taking the bus bound for Sandimen from the Pingtung bus stop. The park, which comes into view after crossing the beautiful bridge in Sandimen Village, is like a vast open-air museum showcasing the culture and lifestyles of indigenous peoples living throughout Taiwan. The buildings and costumes in the exhibition area are all beautiful, and attention to detail is evident in every detail. The traditional dance performances, held twice a day, are truly impressive. While photography is not permitted, it was a rare opportunity to experience the energy of the singing and dancing up close. A shuttle bus runs within the park, and staff will ask you where you'd like and guide you. The park was uncrowded on the day we visited, and the locals were friendly and helpful, playing Japanese music, giving us a warm welcome. During the walk, you can also enjoy local cuisine, such as steamed rice served in bamboo tubes. A relaxing experience of Taiwanese traditional culture in the quiet mountains was a highlight of my trip. I recommend checking your return bus schedule well in advance. The staff were very helpful, so I was able to return safely. Pingtung's mountainous area is a beautiful area with tropical scenery, including banana and palm plantations. This is a memorable spot where you can experience a different side of Taiwan from the city. #IndigenousCulturalPark #PingtungSights #Pingtung #ZeroYenTripAutumn #ZeroYenTripAutumn2025
