Hengchun Ancient City: The Most Well-Preserved Century-Old Heritage in Southern Taiwan

Hengchun Ancient City, located in Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, was built during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. It is the most well-preserved ancient city in Taiwan. The city walls stretch approximately 880 meters and feature four gates: East, West, South, and North. Originally constructed to defend against external threats and maintain local security, the ancient city was initially named "Langjiao" but later renamed "Hengchun" due to its year-round spring-like climate. Although parts of the city were dismantled during the Japanese colonial period, visitors can still admire the majestic gates and remnants of the ancient walls today.
