Wat Phra Si Sanphet: The Sacred Heart of Ayutthaya’s Royal Legacy

#springitinerary Step into the grandeur of old Siam at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, once the holiest and most majestic temple of Ayutthaya’s royal court. Unlike other temples in the ancient city, this one was reserved solely for the king and the royal family—no monks lived here, and no ordinary citizen could enter its sacred inner grounds. Built in the 15th century on the grounds of the former royal palace, Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the spiritual centerpiece of the kingdom. Its three iconic bell-shaped chedis, lined in perfect symmetry, housed the ashes of three great kings and still stand proudly today as symbols of Ayutthaya’s power and elegance. In its prime, the temple was a gleaming marvel. The main hall once held a towering 16-meter golden Buddha statue known as Phra Si Sanphet, covered in over 170 kilograms of gold. Sadly, it was destroyed when the Burmese invaded in 1767, and much of the gold was looted or melted down. Today, the ruins speak softly of that lost splendor. Surrounded by crumbling columns and ancient stone platforms, the chedis still exude a regal aura.
