Ayutthaya, Thailand | A Journey Through the History of Muay Thai

| A journey through the history of Muay Thai. My first time in Ayutthaya, this ancient capital of Thailand, not only preserves the most important historical relics, but is also the birthplace of Muay Thai, the bassinet of this martial art that evolved from battlefield combat techniques into a modern competitive sport! Spend a day exploring the charm of Ayutthaya, discovering the spirit of Muay Thai, handicrafts, and authentic cuisine. 🏛 Ayutthaya Ruins: The Glory and Oblivion of the Ancient Capital Ayutthaya Historical Park was listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. It preserves a large number of temples, pagodas, and palace ruins. Due to time constraints, we chose two classic temples. 📍Wat Mahathat One of the most symbolic relics of Ayutthaya, it was once a royal temple. Not far from the entrance, you will see the most famous "Buddha head entwined by tree roots." The Buddha's head is tightly entwined by the roots of a Bodhi tree, like a witness of time, telling the rise and fall of the Ayutthaya Dynasty. Please note that when taking pictures of the Buddha's head, you need to squat down to show respect. Strolling among the ruins at sunset, it feels like you can really hear the whispers of history. 📍Wat Chaiwatthanaram The temple with the most Angkor Wat style, the pagodas are scattered in an orderly manner, with 12 small pagodas arranged symmetrically around the central tower, showing a unique aesthetic. Change into Thai clothes, and you can feel the mystery and shock of the temple under the changing light and shadow. 🥊 Muay Thai Culture: From Dynasty Battlefield to Legendary Fighters 📍Nai Khanom Tom Memorial This memorial is built to commemorate the legendary Muay Thai figure, Nai Khanom Tom, who is famous for defeating multiple opponents single-handedly after being captured by Burma. He is honored as the "Father of Muay Thai." The small museum displays the history of Muay Thai and how Ayutthaya became one of the birthplaces of Muay Thai culture. Almost every Muay Thai enthusiast will take a photo with his statue, leaving a lifelong memory. 📍Wat Tuek | The Spiritual Support of Muay Thai People This temple may not be an internet sensation, but for Muay Thai people, it is a highly significant pilgrimage site. Legend has it that this was once a training ground for Muay Thai warriors. The Muay Thai murals on the walls are worth seeing. Many fighters come here to pray and get Sak Yant tattoos, hoping to gain courage and strength. 🎭 Cultural Experience: The Warmth of Thai Art 📍Royal Court Doll Workshop Traditional artisans make Thai court puppets here, and the performances of the elderly showcase ancient folk tales. Making a pair of Muay Thai puppets by hand to take home is even more memorable. 🍽 Culinary Exploration: Ayutthaya on the Tip of Your Tongue 📍Boat Noodles (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือป้าเล็ก) Boat noodles are one of the most representative foods of Ayutthaya. A small bowl, paired with crispy pork skin and basil, has a rich soup base and a strong flavor. One bowl is relatively small, so it is recommended to order two or three at a time! 📍Cotton Candy Pancake (Roti Sai Mai) A classic snack in Ayutthaya! Thin pancakes wrap colorful Thai cotton candy. The texture is soft, sweet but not greasy, and it can be called the "Thai version of cotton candy crepe." It is recommended to go to the old shop near U Thong Road to watch the whole production process. 📍Baan Pomphet | Riverside Restaurant with High Aesthetic Value A Michelin-recommended restaurant located by the river, with a red brick exterior and a strong overall design sense, specializing in Thai seafood cuisine. The Ayutthaya specialty grilled river prawns is not to be missed, and none of the dishes are disappointing. The dining experience here is a double enjoyment of sight and taste. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: 📍Centara Ayutthaya Hotel I chose this newly opened hotel that blends modern design with Thai elements. The rooms are comfortable, the breakfast is plentiful, and it is very close to large shopping malls and supermarkets.
