It is located on Khao Sivapapat or what Lao people call Phu Klao. ⬇️ 🔼It is a mountain with a peak that looks like a lingam, which is called Swayambhuvalinga because Khao Sivapapat is similar to a lingam. This is probably the motivation for building a temple to enshrine the Hindu idol. Wat Phou Castle was considered a royal monastery of the kingdom at that time. It was built around the 12th Buddhist century during the reign of King Mahendravarman.
