Oslo, the capital of Norway

Oslo was founded under the name of Ansloh in 1040 at the end of the Viking Age. In 1048, Harald Hardrada established a seaport city or trading place. In 1070, it was promoted to a bishopric and became a bishopric in 1070. Around 1300 it became the capital of King Haakon V of Norway. From 1397 to 1523, and from 1536 to 1814, personal alliances with Denmark weakened its urban influence. In 1624, after King Christian IV was destroyed by a fire during his reign, a new city was built near Akershus Fortress (lower right corner of Figure 2) and named Christiania. in memory of this king. This medieval fortress has become one of Oslo's main tourist attractions today. On January 1, 1838, it became a town. During the union of Sweden and Norway in 1814-1905, Oslo functioned as the capital of Norway. From 1877, Oslo's name was spelled Kristiania in government use, a spelling adopted by municipal authorities in 1897. In 1925, it was renamed Oslo after merging villages that retained their original names.
