Osaka | Namba Yasaka Shrine: The 12-Meter-Tall Lion Pavilion That Repels Epidemics

Guarding Namba in Osaka for over a millennium, the exact founding date of Yasaka Shrine remains unknown. Historical records trace its origins back to the reign of Emperor Nintoku in the 4th century AD, when a devastating epidemic led to the emergence of the deity Gozu Tenno, a unique fusion of Buddhist and Shinto beliefs. Later known as Namba Shimo-no-Miya, the shrine became a spiritual center for the people of Osaka. The shrine's main deity is Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the powerful god who defeated the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi, along with his wife Kushinadahime-no-Okami and their son Yahashira-no-Mikoto. However, the most popular attraction for visitors is the Lion Pavilion located next to the worship hall. Measuring 12 meters in height, 11 meters in width, and 10 meters in depth, this massive lion head serves as a stage for kagura and lion dance performances. It is also regarded as a symbol of protection, warding off evil and devouring all epidemics. Additionally, the area is known for Namba green onions, which have been cultivated here for 300 years. Their unique sweetness and rich aroma have made them a local favorite. The shrine offers various types of fortune slips, including the common fish-shaped omikuji, love-themed omikuji, and fan-shaped omikuji. Its amulets come in diverse designs, such as lion-shaped and backpack-shaped charms. The surrounding area has developed a thriving economy, providing visitors with plenty of options for souvenirs and local goods. In one corner of the shrine, you'll find a miniature Inari Shrine with a torii gate built inside a small altar.
