Okayama｜A Shrine Floating on the Divine Pond

Exploring the Oldest Inari Shrine in Ancient Kibi Province From Okayama, hop on the Momotaro Train and ride all the way to Kibitsu. Ancient Kibi Province refers to a powerful region before the establishment of the Ritsuryō system, encompassing parts of Okayama, Hiroshima, Hyogo, and the islands of Kagawa. It once stood on equal footing with the Yamato and Izumo powers, reminiscent of a Three Kingdoms era. Eventually, the Kibi clan rebellion was suppressed, and the region submitted to Yamato rule. Next to Kibitsu Shrine lies a vermilion-colored shrine floating on the divine pond. This is the oldest Inari Shrine in ancient Kibi Province, dedicated to Uka-no-Mitama, also known as Ukanomitama-no-Mikoto, the deity of grain storage in Japanese mythology. Due to its efficacy, it has long been a place where people in Kibi Province prayed for commercial prosperity. The vermilion arched bridge connecting the shrine feels like a sacred path leading into the realm of the gods. As for the divine pond, local legends say that Kibitsu deity resides on the small island in the middle. Currently adorned with blooming azaleas, the area becomes a viewing spot for weeping cherry blossoms in early spring, followed by hydrangeas in early summer. The pond is home to koi fish, reflecting the blue skies and white clouds, encapsulating the beauty of all four seasons in this divine pond.
