We made the one-hour drive from Akita City to the Namahage Museum, and honestly, it was worth every minute. Akita’s local culture is heavily tied to the namahage—so much so that even at the JR station, you’ll spot signs and statues celebrating this unique tradition. When we arrived, it was quiet—probably because we came in late November, which might be considered off-season. But that made the experience even more personal. The museum features an extensive collection of namahage masks, each with its own character and flair. We watched a short video that explained the origins of the namahage legend and how this tradition has been passed down for generations. It was fascinating to see how these “demonic” figures were actually protectors and moral teachers in disguise. The museum isn’t huge, but it’s immersive and well-curated. We browsed through the souvenir shop at the end, where you could even buy your own namahage mask—tempting, but we settled for some snacks instead for our drive back.
