Next to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, there is an equally famous statue, which is the Sphinx. The name of the Sphinx is also very interesting. According to official explanations, it is also known as the Sphinx, but this name is not entirely accurate. In fact, its true name in Egypt is 'Horus on the Horizon'. In ancient Egypt, there were three Sphinxes: one with a human face and a lion's body, one with a ram's head and a lion's body, and one with a falcon's head and a lion's body. When it reached Greece, the Sphinx had already become a female evil monster. Therefore, when the Greeks ruled Egypt in the 3rd century BC, they used the name Sphinx to refer to this statue. Ancient Egypt was a polytheistic country. People explained the wonders of nature and the creative power of the world through the origins and myths of gods, which was the first step for humans to think about, explore, and understand the world and the universe. The god Horus was one of the most revered gods among the Egyptians. Ancient Egyptians often saw animals as incarnations of humans. In their temples, many gods can be seen with animal heads and human bodies, such as the goddess Bastet related to cats and dogs, the sun god Ra related to falcons, and so on. However, the Sphinx is the opposite, with a human head on an animal body, symbolizing human intelligence and strong control power.
