Built on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the building was designed by Tadao Ando, ​​with a structure that allows the island's nature to enter the building through large openings. In addition to exhibiting the museum's collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, and other artworks, the museum also permanently installs site-specific works created by artists for the location. The artists themselves choose the locations to create their works. The works are not limited to the exhibition space, but are installed throughout the museum, and are also scattered among the coastline and forests surrounding the facility. Together with the site-specific works scattered inside and outside the museum, such as works that confront the nature of Naoshima or are inspired by its architecture, it creates a rare place where nature, art, and architecture come together.
