Nantong's Outstanding Figure - Zhang Jian Memorial Hall

Zhang Jian (1853-1926), born in Nantong, Jiangsu, was the top scholar in the imperial examination in 1894. He is a pioneer and model of Chinese private entrepreneurs, an outstanding educator, philanthropist, and social activist. He was committed to saving the country through industry and wrote a legend of the development of modern national industry in China. He cared for the people, ran education, repaired water conservancy, built municipal administration, and promoted charity; he was a pioneer in promoting the modernization of industry, agriculture, finance, and cities, making Nantong a model county famous throughout the country, and was praised by contemporary academia as "the first city in modern China".
