Hanquan Study

“Hanquan Study”: History - In 1169, Zhu Xi's mother, Madam Zhu, passed away in Ziyang Tower, Wufu. In the first month of the following year, with the help of his student Cai Yuanding, Zhu Xi buried his mother's coffin in Hanquanwu, Tianhu, Mafu, Jianyang. To observe his filial piety, Zhu Xi built a study here, named it "Hanquan Study," and observed his mourning period, studied, and lectured here. - The Hanquan Study collapsed at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. In the tenth year of the Zhengtong reign, Zhu Xi's eighth-generation descendant, Zhu Shu, moved and rebuilt it on the current site due to the dampness of the old foundation. Layout - Ceremonial Gate: Simple and elegant, warmly welcoming visitors from all directions. - Jingxuan Hall: Dignified and virtuous, narrating the ancient and modern stories of Zhu Xi's filial piety. - Jiangxiao Hall: Open yet restrained, reflecting the profound accumulation of filial piety culture. - Library: Extensive and profound, highlighting the preciousness of the vast collection of books. - Thatched Cottage: Light and rustic, recreating the philosophical thoughts of the great sage on national affairs. Cultural Significance - Academic Works: From 1170 onwards, Hanquan Study became Zhu Xi's main place for lecturing and writing. He completed "Reflections on Things at Hand" here and also proposed the "Zhu Xi Reading Method," leaving behind valuable academic wealth for future generations. - Educational Contributions: According to records, many scholars, including Cai Yuanding, Liu Zhao, and Liu Bing, studied under Zhu Xi at Hanquan Study. Hanquan Study cultivated a large number of talents and played an important role in spreading the philosophy of Neo-Confucianism. - Cultural Heritage: With the theme of "Respecting Mother and Cultivating the Mind at Hanquan," the cultural exhibition aims to create China's first filial piety culture park, which is an important measure for inheriting and promoting outstanding traditional Chinese culture and developing the cultural tourism industry.
