Daily Architecture｜Dongfengyun Art Town, Mile, Yunnan

Dongfengyun Art Town is located 11 km from the city center of Mile, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is close to Mile Railway Station and about a 2-hour drive from Kunming. This unique town is built around the theme of culture and art, and is a place for art exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and sightseeing. The town's buildings are unique and full of artistic flair. The most famous building is the Kaleidoscope Art Museum, which looks like a stack of "mud bottles" of various shapes and sizes. Each "mud bottle" is tall, short, fat, or flat, and is not bound by traditional architectural design theories. Other buildings include the Half Cloud Artist Lounge and the Seal Workshop, which are also creatively designed, making the entire town like a museum of unique architecture. Dongfengyun Art Town was designed by Luo Xu, an artist born and raised in Mile, Yunnan. He is not a professional architect, and his artistic inspiration comes entirely from the local natural environment. After a series of artistic practices, Luo Xu decided to build a "city of art" in his hometown of Mile, and Dongfengyun Art Town is his masterpiece. Most of the buildings in the town are made of local red bricks, which blend with the unique red soil of Yunnan. The free and varied spatial forms make the whole town look like it grew naturally from the red soil. In terms of design philosophy, Luo Xu pursues a natural, primitive, and free artistic style. He abandons the constraints of traditional architectural design, allowing the buildings to take on various forms without restrictions. He hopes that in this way, people can appreciate the buildings and feel the charm of nature. At the same time, he also pays great attention to the harmonious coexistence of buildings and the environment, making Dongfengyun Art Town an artistic space that blends with nature.
