A Zen temple located at the foot of Mt. Bizan

📍Zuiganji Temple Zuiganji Temple is a Zen temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect located at the foot of Mt. Bizan in the center of Tokushima City. It is said to have been founded by Zen priest Ichigaku in 1614 (Keicho 19). Zuiganji Temple is surrounded by a deep valley called Kakureya, where a primeval forest of chestnut trees remains at the foot of the mountain, and its Momoyama-style pond ornamental garden, built in the early Edo period and making skillful use of the foot of the mountain, is known as a famous garden. The plants, mainly maples, create a different look through the seasons, and the sight of the Houshou-sui (Zuigan-sui) springing from the valley to irrigate the pond is a well-known, atmospheric sight. In addition, the temple grounds are home to a number of "Christian lanterns," which were carved with images of Mary and falsely depicted as Jizo statues during the Edo period, when Christianity was banned. #0yentravelFebruary2025
