Strolling through Matsumoto in spring, enjoying the cherry blossoms along the Metoba River

When Matsumoto Castle was surrounded by crowds, I chose to take a quiet cherry blossom walk along the Metoba River. This is a hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing among locals in Matsumoto. The riverbanks are lined with cherry trees, and as the spring breeze blows, petals gently fall onto the water, resembling floating lines of poetry. Walking here, there are no noisy tourists—just the wind, the flowers, and occasionally passing residents, whispering about the changing seasons. As I strolled along the riverbank, my gaze alternated between the soft pink sea of blossoms and the distant snow-capped peaks of the Northern Alps. This contrast is truly captivating—spring at your feet, winter lingering on the mountain tops, and me, walking right in between. Beyond cherry blossom viewing, there are a few old shops and cafes along the riverbank. Grab a hot latte, sit on a bench, and watch the flowers, the people, and time gently flow by.
