Matsumoto Castle Matsumoto Castle is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was built in the first year of Eisei (1504) and was originally named Fukashi Castle. It is a typical Heijo castle, with the main tower as the center, and the small tower, Tatsumi turret, Tsukimi turret, and tori turret connected to form the only composite connected tower complex in Japan. Matsumoto Castle is one of the twelve existing castle towers in Japan. It is known as one of Japan's four national treasures along with Himeji Castle, Inuyama Castle, and Hikone Castle. Matsumoto Castle has a unique complex of connected castle towers. The main tower has five floors on the outside and six steps on the inside. It is nearly 40 meters high and has a wooden structure. Generally, floors below the 4th floor are mostly military combat and defense areas, while the 5th and 6th floors are where the city lord and generals hold meetings and observe military situations. Matsumoto Castle has a wide, crescent-shaped moat. A long wooden bridge with red railings spans the two ends of the moat, creating a beautiful scene.
