Known for having Switzerland’s mildest climate, this lakeside town feels more Mediterranean than alpine, where palm trees sway beneath mountain peaks and sunbathers relax beside glassy blue waters. What struck me most about Locarno was its atmosphere—it’s incredibly peaceful but full of life. My journey began in Piazza Grande, the heart of the town, with its colorful arcades and open-air cafés. I was lucky enough to visit during the Locarno Film Festival—a magical time when the whole town becomes a stage, with films screened under the stars. One of my favorite adventures was taking the funicular up to Madonna del Sasso, a breathtaking pilgrimage site with panoramic views over the lake and city. From there, I continued to Cardada and Cimetta via cable car—an absolute must! Standing on a viewpoint where you can see both Switzerland’s lowest point (Lake Maggiore) and highest point (Dufourspitze) is something I’ll never forget. Back in town, I explored Parco delle Camelie, a botanical haven of camellias and subtropical plants, then took a sunset boat ride across Lake Maggiore—the golden light on the water was pure magic. Best Time to Visit: April to October for warm weather, festivals, and boat rides. August for the iconic Locarno Film Festival. Travel Tips: Bring walking shoes for exploring nearby valleys like Valle Verzasca, with emerald rivers and stone bridges. Enjoy Ticino cuisine—don’t miss gnocchi, minestrone, and local merlot wine. Take the scenic train ride to Domodossola, Italy, for a day trip across the border.
